My grandmother died early this morning, aged 95 (her birthday was August 2 and that was the last time I saw her). It wasn't entirely unexpected news, but it still came as a shock. As I drove up to the nursing home after I got the phone call from my sister, I thought of good memories of my grandmother, especially of when I was young and saw her at least once a month. This old photo taken
just about 40 years ago ( I can't be much more than 6 years old--I'm the one on my mother's lap at the left--with my big mouth wide open) shows a happy time at my grandmother's house in Maine, when my cousins (Sara and Beth --that's my Aunt Ann at the right holding Sara--Uncle Bill has a not-so-happy Beth on his lap) would come to visit from New Hampshire and we would stay there all day (sometimes all weekend).
Even though my grandmother was never a very good cook (her talents were knitting and crocheting), she would try her best and we would all have a dinner together (or go out for Italian sandwiches at Sam's around the corner from her house) and great times. Usually there was a football game on TV, or else we would go off to watch the Lewiston High School (my father's school) football team in a game (which cemented early on my personal disinterest in the game--always couldn't WAIT for the game to be over and had NO idea what was going on.)
That's my grandmother in the middle next to my Uncle Bill--she's holding my sister. My sister was always particularly close to her. When I went to the nursing home after I got the call today, it was just me and my sister and I in there, saying good-bye to our grandmother for a bit.
When we left the home, my sister broke down, telling me a relationship she has been in for the last two years is ending. So, coupled with the death of my grandmother, this is going to be a doubly hard time for my sister.
My father, who I have estranged myself from for the last eight years (for valid reasons--won't go into it, though) is affected by the death of his mother, obviously, too. I talked to him briefly on the phone and it seems this death in the family will be the impetus to call a truce .
So, all in all, an emotional day so far for me and my small family.
On top of that, my dog has been ill. I noticed for the last week she hasn't seemed quite herself with low energy and low appetite. John brought her to the vet yesterday and sure enough--she had gotten a tick borne disease. Even though she gets an annual vaccination shot for Lyme Disease (especially rampant in this part of the country) and is on a monthly dose of topical Advantix (kills fleas and ticks), she still got anaplasmosis from a tick bite. Being out in the fields and woods on our walks, there is no way of totally avoiding ticks and other insect bites. She is now on antibiotics and recovering, but slowly. (the additional three shots she got as part of her annual check-up has slowed her down, as well)
Jewel will be fine. It's my family I have to really think about right now.

Oh Tina, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Please consider yourself hugged from this side of the country. I'm sorry your family has had such wrenching news to deal with.
Oh darling,
i'm so sorry to hear your news. Like Meg, i'm sending you all a big hug, my thoughts are with you sweetheart.

I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother. Mother is the same age - 95 - and time is always short at that age.
I do hope this will be a time of reconciliation with your dad.
Perhaps this is also the time to start writing down your grandmother's stories for your daughter.
I, too, am very sorry for your loss. I wish I lived closer for a cup of tea and some comfort. Hugs go out to you and your family.
Dear Tina, I'm terribly sorry about your grandma's departure. It must be one of those moments in life when all pours in, and one has no idea what is going on. My thoughts and prayers to you and all your family, hoping things will soon find a bright spot on the horizon.
I am so sorry to hear your news Sweetheart. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time.
Thanks for sharing the lovely photo! I am sure your granny was very very proud of all of you!
xxxx
Tina, my thoughts go out to you. 95 is such a grand age... Hugs to you and your family.
Oh sweetie, I've only just read this now, I'm so sorry. With everything going on you must have a lot of emotions swirling around inside, so take care of yourself and know that your friends are thinking of you. I'm sending you a big hug from my island on this side of the continent, to you on yours. (fantastic photo, by the way, I picked you out straight away...)
You and your family are in my thoughts... big hugs xox
Tina, your grandma emanates an aura of class and elegance on the photo. I'm sure that with each memory your heart will always be reminded that nothing can ever take away the beauty you have known near her. Even though I've never met you in person, I think you have inherited her class and her beauty.
By the way, I do hope Jewel is feeling better now.
So sorry about the loss of your grandmother, Tina. Its never easy, even when you think you come to the table prepared and accepting of what is inevitable. Even an expected death turns what normalcy there is into emotional disorder for all involved. My thoughts are with you and your family as you work through this hard time. Your blog was very touching and evocative. It made me think of the loss of my mother in the mid 90s and how fragile my father is now as he approaches 89 this coming month.
I wish the best for all of you and send you my prayers and thoughts.
That's a great photo you posted...
Awww Tina, I'm so sorry to hear this.... not unexpected at that age, but still so hard to say goodbye. Glad you saw her recently, and that you have such nice memories to hold on to. Sorry for all the other troubles you're facing too... and your sister's other difficulties to cope with... and the dog, well glad he will be OK once he gets through this at least! Sorry you're going through such a tough time overall... *HUGS* to you.
So sorry to hear you and your family are going through the emotions of a loss...even at an age like this (my own grandma is in her 90s as well) it still is your grandma who is leaving... and there are so many memories!! Fortunately there *are* so many memories which you can keep in your heart forever!
Take care, all of you! Thinking of you. X
I'm so very sorry for your loss Tina, my heart goes out to you. Take care sweetie. xox
Hi Tina, was sorry to hear about your grandma and I hope I'm not upsetting you all over again because I see it's an older blog. I know she is resting in peace now and I'm sure she wouldn't want the whole family to feel sad. Hugs
