The Week That Was..

In spite of the fact that my hair smells all wood-smoky(from last night's fire at a barbecue), my coffee's gone cold and there isn't anything in the house for breakfast(and I am hungry...stomach all stretched out from the mountains of food I ate last night at the party), I think I'll list some things that made me happy this past week(besides my Friday night date and the good time spent with friends at the party last night
and R's Honor Society night).
Of course, there were plenty of things that made me unhappy this past week(and made me rant and rave) and I was even thinking of doing a blog about the two(!) headless squirrels we discovered in our yard one day(our seemingly innnocent and cute and fluffy kitty cat is really an evil, twisted squirrel brains devourer), but then I decided not to.
So, instead ---my Pollyanna-ish take on the last six days or so:

*First--I saw the grey "El Conquistador" El Camino parked in its usual spot at the town beach one morning as I drove in to work. I was starting to worry that something happened to the older man who drives it because I hadn't seen it for months and months. I wrote about my uneasy fascination with this car in another blog (read it here), but I think I have to say I have changed my mind about those cars and I now smile when I see them(there is another El Camino--a brown one--parked in front of a house at the top of our road now , too).

*Yesterday, as I drove up the hill out of our neighborhood there were two children--a boy and girl between the ages of say, seven and ten, flying down the hill on their bikes and dressed in a way that made me think they were out of the seventies. I had a little flashback to my own "70's" childhood for some reason when I saw them and I had a wave of happy nostalgia come over me.

*We finally got our tickets to go and see Guster when they come to Newport in August. I was also pleasantly surprised that R still wants to come with us to this, so it's three tickets for Guster. Not only am I looking forward to that, but also am getting excited about the way the whole summer ahead seems to be lining up, with some trips and concerts planned, and all the unplanned moments ahead, too--whatever they turn out to be. I live in a place where the summers are near perfection, and now, if only I didn't have to work.... ;-)

*I have two more days off after this one--what a luxury! So far, I haven't been too "productive" with my time off--spent Saturday in a kind of haze, not doing too much other than a little garden tweaking and made an orzo salad for the party we went to. But it is a great feeling knowing that whatever I don't do today, I'll still have more time (to do it, or not do it).

* The lilies-of-the-valley out front are blooming!

*Another happy thing--a happy discovery: Armenian String Cheese. Someone I work with made me try it. I told him I didn't like most cheese and was really trying to get out of tasting it, but he insisted I try it. And...I loved it! It's very mild with a good texture and no smell
(I can't eat any cheese that has a smell to it), with little black nigella seeds in it--had never heard of a cheese with seeds in it before.
It's great on a platter with some pita bread or crackers, some Kalamata olives or jarred artichoke hearts.
I would eat that now, I am so hungry!
We have cereal and milk in the house, and some frozen waffles so I could eat that. But I am in the mood for something like Huevos Rancheros and a big pile of home fried potatoes and cooked for me by someone else.
Which means going out to breakfast.
Which means first showering to get the wood smoke smell off me.
Which also means having to wait longer for R and Mr. F. to get up.
They are still sleeping and snoring(in Mr. F's case). We got home around 1:00 in the morning, but for some reason I still woke up at my usual time at 6:30 (by the irritating sound of squirrels fighting under our bedroom window--maybe they would keep quiet if they knew about the squirrel killin' feline that lives here) and have been up out of bed since 7:00.

Your happy stuff made me happy. (Even the headless squirrels made me smile... hmmm...)

Gardening! We're converting part of our backyard to a garden - to grow actual food which, other than tomatoes, I've never done. I'm all excited about it. I told C yesterday, "Maybe I have to admit that I like gardening." He said, "Why would that be hard to admit?" I said, "I don't know. Feels like saying I like knitting or something." He said, "You are funny, J."

Maybe I'll take a tip from you and put some pictures up.

I am sorry about the squirrels but if it's any consolation, there are plenty more squirrels to make up for those two. They are very plentiful around here. I shall send a couple down to you.

I don't seem to have any success with lilies-of-the-valley although I love them and their fragrance. I will try some out the back when we have all the landscaping done.

What a great list!
Funny how certain objects can trigger certain feelings. Whenever I see a Dodge Omni, I get this feeling of nostalgia come over me.

Sounds like your weekend was wonderful (minus the headless squirrels)! Hope you enjoy the extra two days :)

Here's wishing you and your family a rather belated great Memorial Weekend.... and a belated super 3-day weekend! Hope you have taken the time to relax and unwind. In Cyprus most people don't eat breakfast and that's really sad. I am the exception that confirms the rule..being a semi-goddess!!! so I always eat 2 croissants with honey and kaseri (cheese) or halloumi(cheese), a fruit yogurt, a small bowl of cereals and a fruit. On Sundays, of course, and ...long weekends it's either eggs and bacon or pancakes and "brioches". But if you have missed breakfast and are still hungry try my melitzanes imam baildi! For God's sake! Not for breakfast! Filakia xxxxx

That cheese sounds interesting. I shall try to find some this week. Hope you get to go out to breakfast this morning. I am craving something interesting but my cupboards and fridge aren't cooperating. I see a trip to Trader Joe's in my future. Have a great day. ♥Rosemary

Isn't it fun to get a 70s flashback...I sometimes have that happy flashbacks as well ;-).

It's great to think about things to do in summer in this period of the year! We still have the feeling of having a loooong summer ahead of us and don't think about the fact that time will fly and that it will be over again in no time. Oh the joys of all those expectations and lovely plans :-).

I love lilies of the valley, one of my favourite kinds. I used to have them in the small garden of our former house. They smell sooo great!!

aside from the headless squirrels i like your list of happy things : ) and i wish that organizing, weeding, gardening, decorating bug would bite me too. i keep looking at our hallway knowing i need to change the color but i can't decide. plus, the kids have been begging for their rooms to be painted. the gardens you visited sound heavenly! they've been working on a botanical garden in our little town and i cannot wait until it finally opens!

~Judy,
I am SO excited for you that you have dived into the gardening thing--and it IS kind of like knitting, isn't it? When I was younger, I thought of gardening as something that older people did, but guess what? We ARE older people, right? Best luck to you with the veggie gardening(shhhh...it's a LOT of work...)and I look forward to more photos of your garden.

~Zuzana( White Lily Woman),
Those four days off were heavenly--wish every week were four days off and only three days to work!

~Sandra,
Oh, we are over run with grey squirrels here, too, and they can be destructive to my garden(they dig up freshly transplanted plants and often bulbs), so despite their rodent-y cuteness, I am not that enamoured of them. But, still...I do feel bad when I see them dead like that.

~Jack,
There must be good story(maybe a blog, even?) about the Dodge Omni in you. :-)

~Wow, Anastasia!
You DO eat a healthy and hearty breakfast--that is great! I wish I could say the same(today it was a bowl of yogurt with fruit and nuts) but I usually eat very little in the morning.
I saw the eggplant dish recipe on your blog--it sounds very tasty and maybe I'll try it(since soon it'll be eggplant season around here...)

~Hi Cessie!
I wish I could send you some lilies-of-the-valley somehow and I bet you can *almost* imagine their scent in your mind, remembering them from your former garden. I wonder what they are called in Dutch.

~Rosemary,
Nah...we nevr DID get out for breakfast, but it was just as well, as there is usually a long wait for a table on Sundays. It was probably healthier for me anyway, to eat simply at home. And, me too!--I need to get to Trader Joe's( a half hour drive away, at least) soon...

~Doreen,
I think I am grateful for my life...about 80% of the time. Thanks for stopping by my blog--I know you aren't feeling yur best these days.

~c.k.,
Um, as for the organizing, gardening, re-decorating "bug" I have caught---"this too, shall pass", don't you worry! I get these whims and am all gung-ho for about four days and then it all peters out.
I said I was going to re-paint my daughter's room at the beginning of last summer and we finally ended up doing it the last three days of her summer vacation...ha..ha! So good luck with TWO rooms. (once you dive in and do it, though, it goes quickly)
BTW...I NEED to get caught up with your blog..I'll be by soon. :-)
