1. In Her Shoes (2005) with Toni Collette (always great in anything she is in) & Cameron Diaz (an underated comedic actress, in my view)Doing the Ten on Tuesday thing again: this week's theme is a list of ten movies you think were underated and overlooked. Some of these happen to be my favorite films, too. I seem to naturally go for the "underated, overlooked" type of film.

2. The Secret Of Roan Inish (1995) directed by John Sayles, with Jeni Courtney and Eileen Colgan . Moody folklore and a mystery for both adults and children.
3. Shall We Dance? (1997) with Koji Yakusyo and Tamiyo Kusakari. Remade Hollywood Style in 2004 with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. I never saw that one but can't imagine it could have improved on this Japanese gem of a movie.
4. The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) Directed by Anthony Minghella. The most current version (have not seen the 1960 version "Purple Noon") of Patricia Highsmith's novel, with Matt Damon, Jude Law and the always amazing Philip Saymour Hoffman.
5. Next Stop, Wonderland (1998) Directed by Brad Anderson, starring Hope Davis, Adam Gelfant(those eyes!), and...the always amazing Philip Seymour Hoffman(and boy, do I despise his character in this film).
6. Me Myself I (2000) A "trading places" movie somewhat along the lines of Nicholas Cage's "The Family Man", but much , much better and Rachel Griffiths in the lead role carries the movie.
7. High Fidelity (2000) Directed by Stephan Frears, with John Cusack, Tim Robbins and Jack Black. Everyone should see this movie!
8. Election (1999) Based on the novel by Tom Perrotta, this is a wicked satiric comedy, starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick.
9. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005) Okay, maybe there is a lot that is wrong with this film, but the fast-paced(even confusing, yes) "Disneyland meets Mickey Spillane" feeling and Robert Downey Jr.'s cheeky comedic style and puppy dog eyes made this extremely enjoyable for me.
And, lastly, my number 10:
Big Night (1996) with Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub. One of the best "food movies" ever.

Interesting Ten on Tuesday...I did *read* In her shoes but never managed to watch the film...I agree with you that Cameron Diaz is an underated comedic actress though! Should watch the film one day I guess.
I did not know the Japanese original of Shall we dance, really should look that one up, sounds great!!

"In Her Shoes" was a surprise to me--I was expecting something "fluffier", but it was a very engrossing "dramedy"(but quite long). So often I get movie ideas from you--I feel almost tickled that I have now given YOU some movie ideas. :-)

I'm so happy you included the original Shall we Dance. I saw it on cable and loved it. Then it came the Hollywood remake and it wasn't as good. That's of course my opinion. If you haven't seen it (the one with JLo), I don't think you are missing much.
High Fidelity is a great movie! I love John Cusack, and silly enough, how he speaks. I think he enunciates very nicely. Jack Black is very funny there I think.
Great choice with Election. Reese Witherspoon is great there (made her annoying character very believable I think), but hats off to Matthew Broderick: he is really good in this movie (here an in the remake of The Music Man).

So glad, too, that you know the original version of "Shall We Dance?", and I have always suspected the remake wasn't worth watching(but have seen the orignal a few times--it is so sweet).
Here's why I'll check out #'s 1, 5 and 6. Because I absolutely love all the other movies on this list. That's rare for me. I often don't agree with people on movies. (I knew there was a reason I keep visiting your blog - it's all that good taste and intelligence!)

OMG...I LOVED Shall We Dance?!!! It came out soon after I moved back to the states from Japan and oh...just such a great movie. Like you, I had no desire to see the remake :-)

We regularly watch these less knowns. Unfortunately, the only one I have seen from thsi list is "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", which was dark, mysterious and really good. I love Val Kilmer in the last scene... Anyway, I really liked it. It was good.

Some years ago, I read Perrotta's "Little Children"(excellent book), but never managed to get around to seeing the movie version(with K. Winslet, in it, right?). There's ANOTHER one for my Netflix "queue".

I had no idea the actress in "High Fidelity" was Danish. I knew her name sounded Scandanavian but thought she was from the part of USA where lots of Scandanavians have settled--her accent seemed completely American to me. Is she a popular actress in Danish cinema?

I was surprised(unless everyone who noticed was nice and didn't let on that they noticed)that no one pointed out that I at first had typed Jack "White" as being in that movie..!

I am glad to know so many people have seen "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", from their Ten On Tuesday lists. Whenever I talk to other people about it, they have no idea what film it is--a sadly overlooked movie.
