Short and sweet today. Which works for me since this is yet another day that is going to be one l-o-n-g one (going in to work earlier than usual and closing the shop today and parent night at the school later), just like every day already this week.
This idea has been floating around the Blogosphere for some time, and my friend Zuzana was tagged to do it today on her blog. So, I am tagging myself to participate, too.
It's an easy task:
List the fifth sentence on page 161 of the the book that is nearest to me.
So, I got up and went into the next nearest room which is my bedroom and closed my eyes, waved my left hand around for a bit in front of the white bookcase that holds mostly fiction (other bookcases in the house hold a variety of mostly non-fiction books), and then grabbed "A Stranger In The Kingdom" by Howard Frank Mosher(a writer I discovered this year and liked so much that I went and got all his books).
Howard Frank Mosher has earned both critical acclaim and a wide readership for his vivid historical portraits of northern New England residents in his fictional Kingdom County, Vermont. A Stranger in the Kingdom tells the unforgettable story of a brutal murder in a small town and the devastating events that follow. HOWARD FRANK MOSHER is the author of ten books, including Waiting for Teddy Williams, The True Account, and A Stranger in the Kingdom, which, along with Disappearances, was corecipient of the New England Book Award for fiction. He lives in Vermont.
Now, it would have been perfect if my hand had landed on the Mosher book sitting on the shelf right next to the one I chose--"The Fall Of The Year".
Anyway, here is the 5th sentence on page 161 of "A Stranger In The Kingdom"(which was also turned into a movie and filmed on location in "Northeast The Kingdom" , which is a real place and one of my favorite places)......
"Clutched to her chest she held a black handbag as large as my camping knapsack."
This was in the part of the book where the reader is introduced to the character of Claire La Riviere. And it doesn't make the book sound too exciting, but it is truly a great thumping good read.

On the contrary, I like that sentence very much. A woman according to my taste; my handbags are always big and full with stuff.
I love the cover of the book as well, very atmospheric.

Ah well! Great minds think alike! I have planned a blog on books for my Friday's Top Ten. Like you, I'm a bookworm! I tend to enjoy poetry more than fiction,though.
