-- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama emerged victorious in the first election returns of the 2008 presidential race, winning 15 of 21 votes cast in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.
People in the village in New Hampshire's northeast corner voted just after midnight Tuesday.
It was the first time since 1968 that the village leaned Democratic in an election.
Obama's rival, Republican John McCain, won 6 votes.
A full 100 percent of registered voters in the village cast ballots. And the votes didn't take long to tally.
The town, home to around 75 residents, has opened its polls shortly after midnight each Election Day since 1960, drawing national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.
As Dixville, New Hampshire goes, so goes the rest of the nation?
Let's hope!! Actually, I am feeling really confident that Obama will get the majority of the votes(and the right amount of electoral votes) to win. I have been nervous and anxious up until today.
Sipping my first cup of coffee, then have to nudge the daughter out of bed for an early morning orthodondist's appointment, and then on to my local voting location. Meeting the husband there, and then off we go to a little diner for breakfast.

Yes I read the same news in our headlines too.

Are they allowed to announce election in results *before* the rest of the country has finished voting?? That's weird. We have legally mandated blackouts on TV and the internet in Canada - When the polls in the east have closed before the west due to time zones, the results as the eastern polls are tallied don't influence results or voters who have yet to vote.

Yes. I agree. It is weird to be able to post some results already....We are not allowed to do that in Canada!!

Because Dixville is a bit of a novelty(first to vote at midnight on Election Day and so small in population) I suppose that is why the votes are tallied and announced early.
Elsewhere the results are not announced or made available to the media until at least after the polls close(varies from state to state--between 6:00 and 10:00 PM, I think). In 2004 there WAS a good deal of controversy over the media announcing the election results from states in the east before the polls closed in western states.
I think there will be a little more restraint about announcing results too early this election, but belieive we'll start hearing results from the states in the east and midwest as early as 8:00 tonight.
Wow...I hadn't heard anything at all about it. The local news ignored that here, but that could be because most of the state of Texas eats/breathes/sleeps Republican.
