Friday Fill-in...1. Enough with the _____ announcement of school cancellations around here the night before, when only 2 to 3 inches of snow is predicted or it is going to be...cold!. (see further below for explanation/rant.)
2. American Idol_____ causes me to be conflicted. I want to not get sucked into watching it(it is everything about music I am so not into at all), and yet...I can't look away. Must...resist.... somehow.
3. I've been craving _____new boots and not the L.L. Bean kind, but gorgeous sexy new black boots. High boots-low boots, I am not sure what kind. But I want to check out the sales...
4. The Office_____ makes me laugh.
5. I wish I could go to _____ Hawaii next week. (and stay until the first week of April)
6. The never-ending Israel/Palestinian conflict_____ has been on my mind lately.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to _____ "Slumdog Millionaire", tomorrow my plans include _____ more sit-ups (first time in my life that I popped a button on a pair of jeans!) and a birthday dinner for my sister at my parent's house and Sunday, I want to _____ get my veggie and flower seed orders filled in and ordered!
**On Wednesday, dozens of schools in this state cancelled school for the next day by 7:00 in the evening in anticipation of....the 2 to 3 inch snowfall that was threatening us! It amounted to practically zilch, with most of the accumulation along the coast(which means us, by the way, and our school district did NOT cancel and we all somehow survived)and barely anything further north and inland where nearly all the school districts cancelled classes. You would think they would feel stupid after that, but no-- a good portion of those same schools also announced school cancellations for today because it is going to be too cold. Maybe in the cities it is different with kids actually walking to school, but I know for a fact that most younger kids sit in their parent's warm car at the bus stop on cold days.
Yeah, I know I sound like the Dana Carvey grumpy old man("In my day we waded in thigh high deep snow for three miles in shorts just to reach the school bus stop where we rode a bus with no heat and we...LIKED IT!"). We are only midway through January with more cold and snow to come, I am sure. Seriously, so far this winter, it seems like half the school districts have cancelled classes every time snow is forecast. If they keep doing that, kids will be in school until at least the 4th of July. BTW, here's the weather report for this region today: Sun and clouds mixed. Cold. High of 18F(-8*C). Low of 6*F(-14*C) Winds W at 5 to 10 mph
Okay, I am open to any lecturing about my "cold-heartedness" about this.

Hawaii sounds good, I have to agree.;)
I remember all the school cancelations when I lived in NC. Furthermore I remember everyone running to the stores to buy "bread and water", when snow was in the forecast. It was always amusing to me, that everyone expected to be snowed in when just a tiny bit of snow fell.;)
We are suppose to get snow here this weekend.;)

Ah yes, the mad dash to the store to stock up on bread and milk when the first snowflake falls. It happens here, too!
Enjoy your weekend snow--the best time for a snowstorm, so at least you are home and then can get out to enjoy it when the snow stops falling.
We had a nice "dusting" of snow yesterday and today is sunny, so from my window and the inside of a warm house, it is very nice to look at.
I wish I could warm it up for you up there. It's cold down here too...so cold that the cat is not arguing about sitting with ME for a change!
I have a few grumbles about "cold day cancellations" but I'll keep those to myself. I'd just go off on a tangent. Instead, I'll try to get you a picture of my "Michael Phelps Fan Club Goggles" to make you laugh.

oooooh, you're getting something akin to our weather, except we consider it rather pleasant when it is only -10 to -15*C in the winter. ;)
The jet stream is working in BC's favour right now, keeping the worst of that Arctic flow out of the province and pushing it east (and south, I presume, based on what you're writing). However, it seems like it may not last too much longer as the weather forecast calls for -20*C early next week. A-gain.
I have been wanting (desperately) black, knee length boots (flat, preferably) for the past year or two. I've also been keen on getting a pair of Wellies, since they seem to be very popular in Vancouver right now. Must check the internet for ideas and shopping options...

Now, should I wish that it warms up on your side, even though I know that happens until April?...hmmm perhaps "stay as warm as you can" would be better.
The thermometer says it is cold but honestly it doesn't feel that bad to me when I walk Webster. There is no wind. We got only a dusting of snow.
Good luck with your boot and seed shopping. I have always heard that the best gardens are planned before a cozy fire.

I love The Office - it was so funny last night. It was -11 this morning when I started my car, and we did have school. We've had cancellations 3x so far for decent storms... it's a bummer when we have so many snowdays, but for me I don't get bummed until June because I love the surprise day off!
I've given up on trying to look away from Idol. It's pretty harmless as far as TV goes.

I don't understand the "cold" closings either. They haven't happened yet this winter, but did in the past few. Don't the schools and buses and cars have heat? I don't know where this thinking is coming from. And the boots? Love the black ankle boots,they look great with a long skirt, jeans, pants. Lots of use.

But here they haven't been closing schools so easily.... they might have a delayed opening. And I sure have noticed how all the kids are driven to the bus stop and wait in cars for the bus... even in warm weather... wow!! Yep, I used to walk to school with friends in snow, cold, rain, everything.... LOL. Well, till high school, when I walked to a bus stop.

Getting used to the cold actually, and thought it rather warm when I took a walk this morning. I hope the goggles are off? My kitty loves to come right on my lap as soon as he comes in from outdoors these days, too--I don't mind too much, although it is bothersome when he does it while I am at the keyboard here and he trys to put his chin up on it at the same time.

Sunshine--the warm Florida kind_ sounds really good to me right now! But there is something beautiful and fun about snow. Are you originally from Maine ? I grew up in Augusta and a place in my heart will always tie me to that state. :-)

The temps are not too bad and it helps being aware that there are places where it gets far colder and stays that way longer. During the day and if it is sunny it IS pleasant, but at night...bbbrrr...that is another story.
As for boots--try Sierra Trading Post for boots(good shoes--good prices)--don't know if they ship to CA, but I bet they do. We'll have to show off our boots if we end up finding what we crave. :-)

I am wearing my warmest sweater today and feel very toasty--indoors, that is! I guess if I want truly warm and green and luch right now, I can dream of places like Hawaii or...Guatemala, right?

I agree--the weather is certainly bearable(especialy in the woods where it is protected from the wind). We'll be maing a fire in the woodstove today and I think I'll take your advice to heart and maybe sit down in front of the stove with my catalogs and order my "garden".

Well, since you are a teacher, I can't deny you the pleasure of an unexpected day off. (my husband is a teacher, too, and he gets downright giddy when he has a "snow day"--he hasn't had one yet this year, though)

I am calming down a little about the "cold" excuse for school closings. It might be that in some communities, such as the cities where poorer families tend to be, they are concerned about children not being dressed warmly enough. I really don't know, though...cannot remember ever having school closed when I was a child because it was cold.

Frozen pipes in your house? I hope you can get it all thawed out soon..! I hope I get my boots, too...sometime. Just found out I have to have my car's windshield replaced, though--there is a crack in it from possibly flying sand/rocks and the cold? So, might have to wait a bit for the money for boots. :-(

Ahhh..so THAT'S where you are in northern New England! Have you lived there always? Do you think it is the best place? ;-)
I have lived in RI for far more years than I lived in Maine but I still feel a pull towards Maine(whenever I visit, I swear, I become instantly happier). I moved here with my family the year I was ten, but we always visited friends and family in Maine, of course for years. Now, sadly, we have hardly any connections left there.
Gal- I have lived in lots of different states (my ex was in the military) including lots of different places in MA (almost your neck of the woods), but have been here for almost 7 years. I'm staying for the time being, though I could handle living in northern NH.
How was Slumdog Millionaire? I wanted to go see it this weekend, but didn't get around to it...

I would see "Slumdog Millionaire" again--it was that good. I hope you get to see it sometime soon. It seems to be popular now, and when we went, the theater was packed, so if you go--I say get there early.
