This is the official portrait of President(first time I can write that!!!!) Barack Obama, by Pete Souza, the newly-announced official White House photographer. This is also the first official U.S. presidential portrait taken with a digital camera.R and I , bowls of ice cream in hand (and much warmer than the crowds in D.C.) watched the historic ceremony together on the couch this afternoon. It had been set to be taped while we were out. R was having her tooth pulled(a simple procedure to remove an *extra* tooth) at the dentist's just as Obama was being sworn in, so it was a slightly delayed viewing (hurray for DVR!). The funny thing is, that as I type this, the TV coverage is still going on, seven hours later. And I have been a media junkie with the radio on NPR in the kitchen and CNN on the TV in the other room, going back and forth. (Thought it fitting that Dick Cheney had to ignobly vacate the White House by being pushed in a wheel chair, too. Buh-bye!)
This afternoon, I made soup stock--a special Inauguration Day edition-- from the saved up vegetable scraps and trimmings I keep in a plastic bag in the freezer. Every time I prep food, I toss the celery tops, nubs of onion, pepper ends and any other vegetables pieces(all washed first, of course) into this bag. It was looking full today, so I decided to dump the contents into a pot of water(with a clove of garlic and an extra small onion added) and simmer it for an hour or so. It makes the house smell good...and then I divide the strained broth into smaller freezer bags so I have broth for cooking for the future. And then I just wash out the bigger, newly emptied bag, and restart the whole process.

What a good idea for your soup!! I will keep that in mind!
I have followed a lot of the inauguration...could not resist to watch/listen to it all either.... until my friends came over for our book/read/write-clubnight and now it's past midnight here and I'm tired but happy. So thought I'd check some blogs (as a little cooling down and as it's suddenly very quiet here ;-)) before going to bed.
I'm glad R was doing good after her dentist visit!
Have a good night!

I am glad you and R got to bond and eat ice cream together while watching the dvr. Such a grand day. Good soup weather...Rosemary
Hope the tooth extraction site mends well... no fun, that.
We listened on the radio at school, and the first time I heard them say President Obama, I had a lump in my throat. I've been glued to MSNBC since 2:30... yikes. :-) Happy inauguration!
I should've thought of that idea before - to keep the veggie stubs cooled and make soup from that... Thanks for the tip!
Sounds like you had a great day.;)
The coverage in the media was extensive here as well; I was very impressed by his speech and the fact that he walked part of the way with his wife by his side.
The soup sounds delicious.;))
I send you mail, but not sure you got it; it might have been redirected as spam.;)
Cessie and Claudia,
I should add that you shouldn't bother saving any veggie scraps like cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale...because it'll give the broth an unpleasant and bitter taste. That is what I have heard, anyway, so I don't ever put them in.
oh wow, this had to be one of the most helpful tips for cooking i've read. Thank YOU! i've been meaning to make my own stock because i don't like buying something i know i could make so easily but i've had the "bag" in the fridge and of course not sure about using it after only a few days and then it's not enough. so the freezer is an Excellent idea!
first time here Thank you!
Thank you for sharing that picture...I have hope for the first time in a LONG time!
And what a great soup idea!
