Gal Friday's 12 Coffee Facts:
******
*********
1. I started drinking coffee at about age 14--highly sweetened and loaded with cream--on a visit to my grandparents in Germany. We drank coffee and ate cake every day in their garden(Garten) and it almost makes me get a sugar headache remembering all the sugar I must have consumed.
***
2. I can usually drink a cup of coffee after a good meal in a restaurant in the evening, and have no problem falling asleep later.
***
3. After a later visit to Germany and yet again consuming highly sugared coffee on a daily basis, I couldn't stand any sugar--or even the smell of it--in my coffee after I got back home. I have been that way ever since, taking my coffee without sugar and with only a little splash of milk. So, the Blogthing is wrong about totally "black" coffee(although I could drink it that way if I had to). It is right about my grumpy moments, though--usually when I am feeling rushed and/or stressed.
***
4. I can still vividly remember smelling the coffee (I think it must have been the Eight O' Clock brand from the A & P) brewing on a sunny winter morning in our kitchen when I was about five years old and my mother singing "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning" from Oklahoma. A good memory.
***
5. The first time I ever had espresso was during an intermission at an opera(George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess) that my uncle took me to in Berlin. I was already in my mid-twenties before I ever tried it. And I wasn't impressed. I will take a plain cup of freshly brewed Eight O' Clock coffee over that strong stuff any day. The little cups and matching saucers are cute, though.

6. Coffee, for whatever reason, tastes and even smells better in Germany......
***
7. I was lucky enough to once try Guatemalan coffee sent in a box from a friend in that country (hellooo, Claudia!)--the whole box smelled like coffee heaven and the coffee was some of the best I have ever drank.
***
8. The closest to the taste of a good European blend(or Guatemalan blend) over here, I have found, is the Paul Newman coffee they sell in...McDonald's! I haven't had any from there in a while (usually get it when going on a road trip), so I hope they haven't changed it. But I found it delicious and cheap.
Watch out that you don't spill the extremely hot contents on yourself, though!! ;-)
***
9. I have only ordered coffee from a Starbucks a couple of times. It it w-a-y too strong for me and I can see how someone could really get addicted to it.
***
10. I rarely get coffee from a coffee shop to go. It is either made at home in the morning or in a real ceramic cup sitting down in a cafe, diner or restaurant. Road trips, of course, are my fast food and coffee-to-go exception.
***
11. I store my coffee beans in the freezer.
***
12. Sometimes, if I have garlic breath from a meal and even brushing my teeth can't totally get rid of it, I take a bean out of the freezer and chew on one bean. Garlic breath is gone!(if you think you can't do that, I have heard chewing on a little bit of fresh parsley does the trick, too)

Cool list! I didn't start drinking coffee until I lived in the UK, because I did not like the tea over there. I always do coffee w/ lots of cream and sweetener. Melita at home, or Tim Horton's if we are out. Hardly ever get take out coffee though.
I am definitely addicted.
So many interesting tips. I especially like the one about sucking on a coffee bean for garlic breath. Cool. Love your circle mug too. ♥Rosemary
Oh my goodness, so many facts about you and coffee.;) I can only say that I LOVE coffee, that is all; I could never come up with all this.;)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading it all though, this was a wonderful post for a coffee lover such as myself.
I can add that I started to drink coffee when I was about 12 and it was a sepcial "instant" kind, alreday made with milk. It was called "white coffee".;)
Hope you enjoyed your Saturday morning cup.;)
o.a.m.,
I find it interesting that in the country of tea, you preferred their coffee. :-) I like Melita coffee, too--buy it when it is on sale, sometimes. I rarely go to Timmie's(or Dunkin Donuts, except when...I have a mad craving for a cruller), but from what I remember, the coffee is decent at both places.
If there is anything to be addicted to--I think coffee is one of the less evil addictions-- is the way I see it.
~~See what you started, Rosemary?
Reading your entry today got me going(as well as the coffee, of course) As for the bad breath-coffee bean trick: you have to "bite it", not just suck on it, I think.
~~Protege,
I have to give credit to Rosemary and her blog for inspiring me to come up with my little coffee blog today(and Blogthings, too--can't forget my Saturday Blogthings)
And, I used to drink that instant kind when I was much younger, too. It never quite tasted like coffee, but I drank it anyway.
I got the same answer as you, although I HATE black coffee. I have to have my French Vanilla cream and sugar.
I started drinking coffee because we were told not to do it. We did it on Sunday mornings at church when we were teaching Preschool. We would sneak into the foyer and grab a styrofoam cup of joe with coffeemate and lots of sugar. (Pastor Leach used to like his coffee VERY strong!) I didn't really like it at first, but I eventually loved it. Mostly in University, when I needed that extra jump start. Now I cannot go without it. (Unless I am prego, but you can do amazing things when you are that way!!)
~Manders,
I hear you on being able to do anything when carrying a baby--as soon as I found out was pregnanat, I stopped drinking coffee cold turkey, and it wasn't bad at all.(of course, how quickly I went back to drinking it after!)
I drink tea black, and in the U.K., they set up their coffee w/ a whole bunch of cream... plus I worked crazy long hours at the time, and needed the caffeine fix.
I tagged you for a photo meme at my place...
oops, I meant tea, as in Cream Tea. Not my cuppa, lol.
Hey! I'm smiling and am happy for #7 ;-)
I don't really drink coffee, but did the blogthing just for the fun of it and got black coffee as well! Pretty accurate, except for the "high caffeine addiction level", which isn't true at all.
Mym mom introduced my brother and I to coffee when we were very little, and had our very own mini-cups :-) But she made us what my grandma refers to "coffee tea" becasue it was very, very, VERY light. These days, I prefer tea, but if there isn't any available, I'll take a cup of coffee with lots of soy milk.
