Just some scattered thoughts on a Saturday on which I hadn't intended to write anything.First the big news. I am now officially going grey. My hair stylist confirmed it. Just after Christmas, R had been combing my hair and she insisted she saw a thin strand of white or grey hair. Since it was at the back of my head, I couldn't see it. I really didn't believe her(denial?).
I had my hair cut this morning and as I was paying Nicole I asked her(as I always do) if she had seen any grey hairs. "Oh yes, I saw one." she casually told me. So...I can no longer boast I have no grey hairs. I figured, that with me pushing 47, I was due to be eligible for the grey hair club this year. I expected it. I have been lucky so far, really, getting this far with no grey(take after my father that way-I didn't notice any grey hair on him until he was 50 or so).
My hair looks brown still but if these grey strands start multiplying, I am seriously going to have to consider the possibility of dying my hair. I just don't know. I am so lazy and it'll be an additional thing to have to do.
In another bit of not so welcome news, we apparently have a mouse in the house. Last night, as I was putting a box of cereal back in a lower cabinet which is a built-in lazy susan, I spotted what I thought for sure were mouse droppings. I have lived in this house for eight years and have never had any reason to believe there were mice. We have a cat who regularly kills rodents(and yes, birds--not so good) and brings them to our doorstep. Maybe because this winter is so cold, some mice were desperate and found a way into the walls. I am very disgusted by the thought of a mouse eating anything in the kitchen and leaving droppings there. And I like mice, having rescued abandoned baby field mice and helped raise them before. But, this is bothering me. J cleaned the mess up and took all the food off those shelves while I was out this morning. We'll have to get some of those humane mouse traps(catch and release) and put all the food into glass or thick plastic containers now. I can't believe my cat has been slacking and we have mice!
I'll bet this hawk-a Cooper's Hawk(the photo above)-that we keep seeing around would like to find some mice. R saw a juvenile Cooper's Hawk( Accipiter cooperi) in the yard yesterday after she got home, just sitting still on a big branch of one of the trees. I have seen these before during the daytime, perched on an electrical wire, thinking it was an owl. But then I would be confused as to why an owl would be out during the day. The juvenile Cooper's Hawks resemble an owl especially, with their head shape and the spotted white breast. R said she thought we had a Snowy Owl in the yard, so she looked up the bird in a bird book we have and was the one to figure out what we have been seeing around here has been this kind of hawk all along.
One more thing....
Here's a little snippet of a conversation I overheard while wheeling the carriage through the crowded aisles of Stop & Shop(after the haircut). An elderly man was saying this to another man , "Well, we're all here temporarily, now aren't we?" A little bit of supermarket sagacity.

Sorry about the mouse :( I've heard that if you plug up small openings in the foundation, etc, with steel wool, it'll keep them out. Beautiful hawk photo - with that guy hanging around, the mouse population should be under control!
Ah . . . grey hair. I have lots but blondes tend not to show the grey so much. I have a friend who turned grey in her 30s and looked very old, I thought. My mother-in-law had white hair as long as I knew her (she raised twin boys on her own which may explain that!) and always looked young. It's an individual decision. I have decided to go with the natural look at least for the time being!
Whoops!
Oh I have loads of grey strands for years already... I'm not even thinking about it anymore. I don't dye (allergic but I do think I would be too lazy as well lol) but I'm ok with it now.
It's always so interesting to overhear conversations!! I always like to phantasize about the rest of their stories lol.
Such an interesting post today. I thought I heard a mouse in the walls recently and set some traps. Haven't caught one yet thank goodness. I would be too scared to empty it. Luckily my hair is light and my grey looks like blonde streaks. I wouldn't like the upkeep involved with hair dye. Your hawk is beautiful and I love the old man conversation you overheard in the supermarket. ♥Rosemary
Joanne,
Steel wool, aye? Just wish I KNEW where in the walls or foundation these rodents made their way in! Our food is now all in containers and we found a trap that catches the mouse(but then you have to brng it outside and hope it doesn't come back!) The hawk photo is frm a bird site(not mine) and I read a bit more about it and was a little horrified to learn it preys on smaller birds like woodpeckers and robins!
~Sandra,
I have seen some women with all gry or striking white hair even, who look stunning like that! I think it is accepting the aging part--let's see how I do.
Whoops?! :-)
Cessie,
I think you look sparkly and young when I see photos of you--would never have thought you have much grey hair.So..that is inspiring to me.
~Rosemary,
Another inspiration, you are! Your blonde hair must really work with the grey--lucky you. Mine will probably stick out ike Cruellla DeVille's!
I know how you feel about being scared of the possibility of finding alive mouse in one of those traps. I wonder what the outcome will be for us?
Again, I guess I should have credited the bird site for the photo--it isn't mine. The bird is both beautiful and scary at the same time, I think.

Rosemary, again...I just LOVE overhearing bits of conversations in stores.
Ohhh, yeah those terrible little grey hairs! I am only 29 and I have several! Mice suck, sorry to hear you are having an issue with them!
Ooooh, I've started growing white hair when I was about 30, now I've got plenty right above my forehead, just another good reason to keep dying it...My father's sister started growing white hair when she was younger that 30, so I guess that runs in the family...:(
As for the mouse, I can understand how unpleasant that can be. My grandparents had one when I spent a summer there wth them and I must say that I accidentaly killed it while chasing it in my room one night (it had woken me up and I was terrorised) and I felt so badly about it.
I am envy that you only see "signs" of grey hair.;) I am totally grey, well, at this point probably white. And I have been for over 10 years! So, I have felt like you for a long time now.;)) I was shocked when I discovered I was grey in my late 20ties.;))
I did not know you have a cat! Does it have a name? I will post a fun tag tomorrow, if your cat or Jewel feels like being tagged, please play along.;)
I love the picture of the bird; magnificent creatures.
Hope the bird or the cat gets the mouse:;)) Preferably without too much drama.;)
~ Roseann,
I am afraid to check the cupboard where the trap is --waiting for my husband to do that..whenever he wakes up.
~Pati and Protege,
So, you must have the hair dying down to a "T"--so you do it yourself or have it done professionally? It's been a long time since I did any cloring of my hair, but you know--it could be fun.
~Pati,
I am afraid to ask the details of your accidental mouse killing.
~Protege,
My cat's name is Pete and he is black and white and very fluffy(like a Norwegian Forest cat!)--I will try to find a photo of him. He gets shoved out of the limelight by my dog, it's true. Poor Sweet Pete.
Well what a day you had! Love the pic of the hawk. He looks so serene, and in a way, looking down on us and watching thinking....those crazy people are so entertaining!
Love the overheard Stop & Shop conversation. How true that is...
I had mice a few years ago. It was very un-fun. We used sealed containers and put lots of stuff in the fridge. Now that the house has been clear, we use those plug-in things that make the clicking sounds. the sound is supposed to keep them away.
And white hair? My hair is dark too, and they are showing up... Not sure what to do. Let me know if you find a solution.
My mother generally dyes my hair but I sometimes have it done professionally too...
About the mouse...I was sharing the room with my Italian cousin Giulia at the time and we woke up one night with the strange sound of footstep around our bed...We thought there was a ghost, of course...The when we turned on the light here it were: a small little grey mouse, walking freely everywhere around the room, quite unwwear of our presence...It went up near the mirror among my cosmetics, so I grabbed a magazine to chase it away...which I did, but he went under our bed, which was worst, then he climbed on my cousin's little night table, at which point we froze at the thought that it might get into bed with us. I chased it away again so it hid behind the night table. I thought that if I push the night table just a little bit I'll trap it and my grandfather can catch it in the morning. So I pushed the night table against the wall, and we went back to sleep since there was no sound of it anymore...In the morning my grandfather found it dead crushed behing the night table. There was no blood or anything, it was just dead, I felt terrible at the sight of it...but I guess that's what happens when one is really scared!
That's a beautiful picture of the hawk. I love hawks. We only have red-tails here. I haven't seen many of them this year.
I have a LOT of grey hair which I attempt to hide, but inevitably, it returns. I don't know which side of the family it comes from because i don't recall my dad having grey hair the last time I saw him. I just colored my hair two weeks ago, but since it was a home job, I didn't do a very good job. My hair looks like it has sun streaks in it...FOR NOW. When the color grows out, I may go to the salon and have them re-do it. I don't know that the "at home" kits are strong enough for my greys. :D
I hope your cat gets back on the job and finds that mouse and gets rid of him for you!
You got your first grey hair now??? Well, you're definitely lucky then!!!;) I got mine when I was 18 or 19, I think...:(
I have a grey-hair mole...is that what it's called? It's basically a spot on my head with lots of grey hairs. They confuse hairdressers really :-) because they think I'm too young to have them and always tell me to "ask my mom permission to have them colored" hahaha! It's under a bunch of dark ones, so they don't really show up. I kind of like them actually, which is a good thing, because I have the feeling I will have a white head in the future, heritage from both my mom's and my dad's side.
