11 Signs You're Getting Older....

a blooming, "youthful" Mother Nature
another quick sketch from a slow day at the shop
***********

I find I can't make the time to blog when the husband and child are home on vacation. We are either off doing things together(R and I had a mother-daughter lunch date today at Seven Moons, for instance) or the computer(we only have one in the house still) is being used.
But I thought I would hop on and at least do the Ten on Tuesday list.
***** Ten Signs You Are Getting Older ******
Very appropriate for my mood today after the ugly shock of seeing my jiggly self in the mirror when I attempted to try on swimsuits at a few stores. Lets just say I have for the first time in my previously skinny life gained some noticeable pounds. This past winter, I really got into cooking and trying out new recipes and I think I must have been sampling too much of my usually successful edible concoctions.
It's not so bad...I am okay with being a little more rounded and will need to accept that I will from now on be choosing clothes in a slightly larger size. And that my lazy self needs to exercise more and not slack off on the stomach crunches.

1. I can't comfortably read the font and typeface at Facebook--too dang small!
2. Have been visiting the dentist the last few years needing crowns and fillings replaced. At least I am outliving the warranty. ;-)
3. I like to go to bed early and get up early (slowly reversing from what I used to do when I was younger)
4. Don't know the names of most current singers or even know the songs on the Top 40 list(maybe there isn't even any such thing anymore) other than what I have learned from my daughter, and mostly listen to NPR radio all day instead of music.
5. a noticeable weight gain for the first time in my life(aside from when I was pregnant) at my last doctor's visit(and visibly in evidence in the dressing room mirror today). I don't mind too much because I figure it is only natural and I kind of like the more jiggly me! But the whole bathing suit shopping experience is even less fun now.
6. a grey hair or two(I have not seen them, but have been told by my daughter that they are there!)
7. If I sit too long in one position(in front of the computer, for example or cross-legged on the floor doing an art project) I am all stiff and creaky when I get up and try to walk. Now, that really makes me feel ancient!
8. I only get out to see live music maybe once or twice a year now(this is somewhat related to no. 3). At least I know I'll be going out to see Jonathan Richman in June(already have my tickets), will see Guster in August and actually went out AFTER ten o' clock to a club a few weeks ago( and felt quite all right the next day)--maybe I am staying a little more youthful?
9. I HAVE to put on a moisturising eye cream morning and night! But, again, I really don't mind the little extra crinkly wrinkly stuff--it is only natural and part of the process.
10. I accept things more(such as my own imperfections) and find I have more patience. I might just be growing up, finally.
....and a no. 11:
I also have to admit to being a cranky older lady sometimes when people are rude or the world changing so much(newspapers fading, for an example) and sometimes can feel myself becoming a dinosaur along with all the disappearing things I love.

I love your sketch of Mother Nature. She's very lovely. And once again I thoroughly enjoyed your ode to the signs you are getting older. Actually, you are getting younger. You have a cool new clock on your sidebar (I want one too) and you've mastered blogging all the while hanging on to old some ways such as writing letters, etc. I have always felt at least 20 years younger than others in my age group. Don't know why...♥Rosemary

Great post! Love the sketch, love the new sidebar thingies (and the new photo of you in front of the clocks). You do seem to be mini/skinny - maybe a few more pounds is ok on you. :-)

I'm envious for Seven Moons - looks delightful. I'm also envious for trying on bathing suits. I am in no way ready for that torture.

I got bifocals last month. They are awesome.
::sigh::

You know you are old when you outlive your funeral home as did my mother. She had prepaid her funeral but the home closed before she was ready to use it. (The money was guaranteed so no problem there)

I agree bifocals are great. My husband has tri-focals but then he IS older than I am!

Wait a minute, you mean 11 signs you're just beginning ... When in your earlier life were you on Facebook? And did you go out to see live music when your kids were little? And did you know your passion well enough to sit very long with it until you're stiff when you were younger? Sounds like you're embracing living now!! Enjoy ;)

Oh...I can so relate to sitting to long and then hurting. I do that all the time. One would think that I should have learned my lesson by now. Great list!

Mine's up...come on over!

~Rosemary,
I found out how to get the clock from Arty(December Girl). There is an Orange slice clock available, too! ;-)

~Only,
In clothes, holding it in all in, I still look okay...but in a bathing suit in front of the evil dressing room mirror it is quite illuminating. I am only going through having to try on bathing suits now because I should have gotten a new one 2 years ago(mine is all faded--but that is how much hate trying on swimsuits that I'll keep on wearing it)
*I think I need bifiocals, too! *

~Trifocals? Didn't know there was such a thing. Is there a certain prescription for attempting to read the Facebook font?

~~Joanne,
That was such an unexpected, but inspiring view of my list. :-) I actually am enjoying life, but in a different way.

The last point (number 11) is sad in a way. There is a song or a poem there somewhere...

Hehe Tina, I agree with all of your points, they could have been mine!

But I love that you list them with optimism, humor and a pinch of reality; we will get older, it is bound to happen, so accepting it and dealing with it and doing the best we can to remain looking good is all we can do.;))

I have always though that true beauty lies in a face that has lived.
And ultimately I am sure you look great, that picture on the sidebar proves it plenty.;))

Have a wonderful mid week and enjoy having your family at home.
I am off on a mini vacation too.;))

hmmm...should we say "11 signs you are changing"? Seems to me that one cannot stay the same forever, either physically or mentally. But it is those changes that make things more interesting, don't you think? One can learn to appreciate what one has/had. Of course the cranky bones when standing up from being too long sited is not a pleasant thing :-), but at least one knows what was like to be flexible :-)
Life changes indeed.

Hi Tina: I adore your "sketch" from the office. Geez, that would be a major work of art for many of us. She's so full of life. She looks like she's thinking, "I know what I know..."

Also like your "ten things" list. I, too, feel really ancient when my body doesn't work the way it used to.

I got my first bifocals this year, too. And swimsuits. No way Jose. It's board shorts and a rash guard for me!

Thanks!

Hey Tina! We just got back from our vacation and getting tired, hurting feet daily made me feel old! We did walk almost non stop for at least 12 hours a day. Lines at Disney are annoying no matter your age though :)

As we are the same age, I am infinitely aware of everything on your list. I'm not very accepting of the bathing suit blues, but I agree with you totally on the 'crow's feet." I sort of like them. It's as if my face isn't blank anymore. It's lined with all those times I've laughed, and how can I be anything but happy about that?

Beautiful sketch!

For me, getting older means caring less about what other people think and becoming more opinionated (ie: allegedly more cranky, but not really). I think that's a good thing. :)

For me, once I turned 30, the gray hairs really kicked in. However, I think of them as natural highlights (mostly).

I'm finding that I am more active, and acting less mature and adult-like as I get older, probably because I had to grow up so quickly and be an adult at an early age due to my family situation. I guess that's a good thing in some ways but possibly not in every way...

Awww Tina... I am with you on those things, except for getting up early (!) ... I am tired all the time and mornings just kill me. I really NEED to sleep till 9, but can't when I work... so as you know, I'm in zombie state all week. Other things I'm a bit ahead of you on... I have lovely grey roots now that need colored every few weeks... I don't even dare get down on the floor anymore or I really need a hand to get up(!)... moisturizers, always... I'm drying up.... more dental problems... ahh yes.... stiff and creaky. After work I lie down and rest, and I totally stiffen up... it's all over once I lie down!!! :D But.... I'm accepting it... I guess. The extra pounds, I don't even worry about anymore at this point!!! ;) Just enjoy whatever we can!!

good list. i also don't know the current popular singers, have trouble reading the small type and don't even get me started on the creaking. we worked in the yard a lot today and i feel it all over. sheesh, i'm only forty for god's sake! and that sketch? really is awesome. i would LOVE to leaf through your sketch journals. you are so talented.

I was smiling when reading your list of signs. I don't mind getting older either, it's just life and I love living it :-)).
I have known ladies at high age who were still so much into daily life and updated with everything happening that I think it can be possible to grow old in a nice way...
The only thing I'm scared of though is getting ill. My granny (mum's side) has severe alzheimers and I don't think it's fun to be old and in a closed ward of the caring home :-(

I can totally relate to this post :-) That sketch is beautiful!
