Today, I zipped home for lunch.
Ten minute drive on mostly empty mid-day roads,
ten(fifteen?) minutes to heat my left-over chicken soup and sit and slurp it with the dog staring at me the whole time(yes, I let her lick the bowl afterwards),
then a ten minute drive back to work.
And I saw some kind of surprising and slightly memorable sights on my ride back. Well, memorable to me, but then, it doesn't take much to entertain me.
It was a typical November day--grey skies(again), windy---so windy the dead, dry leaves were getting whipped up in to little wind tunnels and making the mostly bare branches of the trees sway. Grey ocean the same color as the sky, turbulent waves--the beach appeared lonely with just one or two cars parked in the beach lot.
As I drove out of my street, I noticed rolling empty plastic garbage barrels on every street, all over the neighborhood. It was trash pick-up day so everyone had put out their trash barrels this morning before leaving their house.(except us--our trash day is Wednesday--a different outfit comes for our garbage). The wind had scattered all the trash barrels and it was actually funny to look in all directions and see them rolling and bumping along, scattered in streets or in completely different yards. I am sure many of the people in this neighborhood came home to missing barrels this afternoon.
The other interesting sight was along the main road I travel to get to town. Just after a stone walled-in field , I noticed, three people on bicycles with back-packs and big guitar cases strapped to their backs. They were all bundled up against the wind and cold, struggling up a small hill. One of the bikes, I then noticed, was one of those two-seaters, and on the back seat was a little boy( he was big enough to be pedalling, though).
Was this the local version of the Von Trapp Family Singers?
Why wasn't this kid in school?(maybe this was some kind of home-schooling event?)
It just made me wonder, long after I had passed them with my car, where they were headed on their bikes and what was up with the instruments on their backs.

The ocean, well that reminds me strongly of a recent drive to work and our Nordic sea. I was already late but I did stop and filmed its raging beauty. Will post it next week, it was exactly as you describe it here.
The vision of the backpackers with the guitars made me think of the movie "once".

Very visual post! It is funny to see kids out and about during school hours. But a lot of kids are home-schooled these days.

The good thing about living in a small town is that you can , almost invariably, get anywhere in 10 minutes! Considering how wreckless I am at Geography, I can't picture how big or how small your town is - I can't even imagine if it's a city or town (yes I'm that wreckless!) It's a 5-minute drive from home to work for me or a 15-25-minute walk - depending on how fast you walk! Yet, I always have a snack at the school - no time to go back home for lunch. That's one more reason I love www.mrdelivery.com.cy! They provide my lunch on working days! I only wish we had some more dry leaves over here!! Last night's rain was very invigorating, though.
I'm sure Jewel enjoyed licking the chicken soup bowl!
Tina, I like that it doesn't take much to entertain you. I'm the same way and I enjoyed hearing about your drive back. I get amused by shopping carts on windy days and then I chastise the people who probably were too lazy to put them up. I actually had a race with a shopping cart one time. It wasn't funny at the time but now, when I look back I think of it as a cartoon. Weird, huh?

My town(actually--my community is two towns put together) is rather small but there is the town part and the further out regions. Normally I don't go home for lunch but I forgot my wonderful soup and wanted it so badly, that I decided to go home for it. It turned out not to bew a very relaxing lunch with all the driving, but at least it gave me some diversion(and something to write about later)
Like you, I enjoy a good "invigorating" rain storm at night--nice to listen to, I think.

i love your descriptions (and that snap of the leaves). i always wonder about people/kids i see out and about during the day. are they like me and unemployed? are they homeschooling their kids? what's their story? i also think this when i'm driving down the road at night and can see in people's windows. i wonder what they're doing. i'm so nosey. or maybe curious is a better word? LOL
a von trapp note---my son goes to elementary school w/ a grandson of the actor who played rolf in the sound of music. he's visited their school : )
