The news headlines(and the stories within) are making me grouchy this morning!
First thing I see is this headline from the Associated Press:
Imperils!! That's some flowery language. It's snow and ice and yes, it could be a stressful commute in it, but it's not a tsunami or tornado coming. Use caution. That is all.
Then, I read this and find out that my beloved Conan is in true peril from the evil NBC network(and perhaps evilly unfunny Jay Leno). Noooo...! He should have just stayed on the Right Coast in New York and kept his old job if this is what they were going to do with him. I will stop watching NBC if he is demoted...fume, fume...
And thirdly, this story is horrendous, if it is true. It seems giant retailers Wal-Mart and H&M were found to be discarding unsold clothing in trash bags behind their stores in some locations(some even cut up by scissors so they couldn't be worn), rather than at least donating them to charity. This just boggles my mind! I hope the fall-out from this will seriously affect their business. I know I won't be shopping there. It does make me wonder if...other retailers have done this also.
This week the New York Times reported a disheartening story about two of the largest retail chains. You see, instead of taking unsold items to sample sales or donating them to people in need, H&M and Wal-Mart have been throwing them out in giant trash bags. And in the case that someone may stumble on these bags and try to keep or re-sell the items, these companies have gone ahead and slashed up garments, cut off the sleeves of coats, and sliced holes in shoes so they are unwearable.

I don't like to watch the news for these kinds of reasons. Stupid stupid stupid.
That is HORRIBLE!! Although I must say that when I worked at Save-on Foods, the bakery would always throw out recently expired food, even if it wasn't moldy or anything. My friend and I once went to the manager and asked if we could take it to the homeless shelter or something, but he said 'no'. He said he really wanted to do something with it, but the CEOs were the ones with all the rules. I still don't think it is right and a waste of precious resources that could be given to the needy, especially in these economic times.
That is awful. I wonder if it's all the chains or just those mentioned in the story. I've never seen that in my area. But then again, I guess I'd have to be a dumpster diver to notice. Hmm. shame on them.
I've been grouchy this whole week.
I think many of us are a bit grouchy these days but to waste clothing like this when many people are struggling just to survive is immoral.
And yet another reason I hate the store I like to call wall-to-wall-fart. They truly suck.
i hate watching the news and generally avoid it. i pretty much live in a cave and don't know much of what's going on. but i saw the clothing story. i think it is ridiculous but now that it's been made public i wonder if their policy will change. i have an idea there is some stupid red tape excuse for this waste--like they get more money as a loss on taxes than they would if they donated it or something. total corporate bullshit but i bet that's what it is. bleh. this really hasn't been a great week at all.
I keep trying to tell everyone that Wal-Mart is evil. I watched the documentary....
I am not a fan of Wal-Mart and have refused to shop there. Not because they are a big box store or because they take business from the little guy as is always written but because I hear numerous stories like this. And then when I heard some of the things they do with their money politically that did it for me.
It's a free country and they can do with their money what they want. But I can too. So I refuse to shop there.
My sister who does shop there told me that if you have low self esteem you should shop there because it will make you feel skinny and smart in comparison to their average customer and employees. That made me laugh.
Outrageous! Why would they do that? Though let me tell you that here Walmart - yes it does exist on this corner - is known for being greedy and never lose a dime. I wonder, nevertheless, if in a country like mine, less rich than yours, they would go as far as this. They do try to sell you broken things, and damaged merchandise though. With a very ridiculous low discount, but they do try. Greedy, greedy chain.
And what about Jay Leno? It seems this is not his first time doing shady moves, huh?
There isn't much more on the web(I checked Google news today when I got home from work)about the Wal-Mart and H & M story--wonder if they were able to hush things up?
And now...I feel a little callous about mocking the "imperil" headline about the weather conditions, after seeing some photos of frozen solid schoolbuses and icy roads further south. There just may have been some "peril", after all.
That is shocking. I wander what motivates them to do sth like that when so many could use the clothing etc. Heartless.
that is crazy why they would do that instead of a donation. restaurants also throw out food at night instead of donating to homeless centers, etc. why???
Ah, I know how you feel, sometimes I hate the news. Too bad about Conan, I used to watch him while living in the US, he was nowhere so big at that time, but the show was great.
Hmm, that H&M story makes me a bit irritated as I love that store and all my clothes are bought there, I even had a few post dedicated to them.

When there are so many homeless people in the USA - correct me if I am wrong- this is not just unheard of - it's a crime! I've got a lot of clothes and shoes which I don't use for my own good reasons. But I'd be insane if I destroyed them. I donate them to the Red Cross which sends them to people in need- either in my country or in other countries. This said, I do feel very bad about throwing away a lot of food every day. Hardly anyone needs food in my country and I do wish there was a way to send some of these leftovers to people suffering from famine.
