What a difference....

...a day makes. Yesterday looked and felt like December. So cold and windy and grey and wet. The sea was churning and absolutely wild. I could hear it all the way from our house all night. I had to bring my seedlings and plants in pots indoors because of the cold. As soon as I got up and looked out the window this morning, though, I saw that it had turned around completely. Sun shining brightly, and when I let the dog out, I immediately felt the warmth. So strange how it could all change so dramatically in twelve hours. I wore flip-flops, exposing my white toes for the first time this year, as I walked Jewel. Supposedly, R is going to quickly clean up her room(although I hear her singing along with Adele behind her bedroom door, so I am not sure if she is actually picking up in there, or singing in front of her mirror), and we'll go do something later on(lunch outdoors by the river in Wickford, or a walk down to the bay with the dog?). I have freshly baked coffee cake to eat for Sunday brunch and the second episode of the new Upstairs Downstairs to watch tonight(for both of these things, I have Rosemary to thank, for inspiring me to bake and to watch). I might write a letter. I might finish cleaning out the garden beds. I might just sit out back in a deck chair and let the sun soak into me. ** update: turns out, it is way too windy out there to sit, unless you don't mind your hair being blown into your eyes every second and the sound of clanging windchimes from every house on the street(maddening), and not even being able to keep a book page open because the wind keeps flipping it.

I did go into the record shop yesterday(and bumped into Mr. F there) and bought the latest CD from Bettye LaVette(my sister has raved about her)--"Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook". Her version of The Beatles "The Word" is the best I have ever heard(it is the first song on the album, and I'll have to become better aquainted with the other songs on it).

Tuesday Randomality

Some random thoughts that have been percolating around in my head today....

****

Today was the first day that really said "spring" to me. Even without the sun out, the atmosphere felt warm and gentle and softened around the edges. The harsh, barren look of winter is gone! The birdsong ringing throughout the neighborhood made me think of a Baroque symphony as I walked Jewel, and I could smell the earth. Finally, you can see a haze of soft pink and red and yes, even green on the tips of the trees. When I get home from work, I hear kid's voices outside--see kids on bicycles.

**

Yesterday at work, I had an illuminating conversation with a customer. A painter who is somewhat well-known in the area had come in to price frames for an upcoming show. She asked if I, too, was an artist and I said I was, b-u-t...really hadn't done much with my art since becoming a parent. She told me she didn't take off with her art until after her last child was away at college. That was inspiring to me and made me think it might be "okay" to be a late bloomer after all.

***

I saw this magazine cover when I was in the grocery store today: Why does every celebrity now think they are that interesting when they are pregnant? Do they not realize that millions of other people have, yes, carried babies and the public have seen plenty of bulging bellies. And, Mariah, that is a rather unflattering photo of you and why do you have a need to share it with the whole world? Didn't Demi Moore and countless other copy-cat expectant celeb mothers already do this gimmick?? Why do so many celebrities feel that their pregnancy is so much more interesting than any other pregnancy? "All about the babies"...spare me!

Just last weekend, I finished re-reading the second of the two memoirs ("A Girl From Yamhill" was the first, and "My Own Two Feet" the second) written by Beverly Cleary, of Beezus and Ramona, Henry Huggins, Mouse And The Motorcycle, and other books fame. I was so enchanted with her early life in the 1920's and Depression era 1930's that I started to wonder if she were even still alive and I had to look it up. I was relieved to learn she was indeed, still alive and would turn 95 this year. And her birthday happens to be today. This is a woman whose books I discovered in the second grade and I felt I "knew" her characters, especially Beezus and her little sister, Ramona. To walk to my elementary schools when I was growing up in Augusta, Maine, I cut through two yards from my street to a Quimby Street, and that was the last name of Ramona in the book(who actually lived on Klikitat Street--I'll always remember that). I really related to those books, and even though Cleary's characters in her books lived on the other coast all the way over in Oregon, I saw my own neighborhood when I read the books and it felt familiar to me. I got to relive a little of my childhood over again when I read some of the Beezus and Ramona books to Rachel when she was younger, too.

Finally, an amazing video showing some intra-species love(or else the fish breath on the dolphin was what was attracting the cat!). This is guaranteed to make you feel all gooey inside...awww...

Grammy Love

I had originally wanted to share some photos I took Saturday night of the cozy place we ate at in Newport, but this morning, as I took out the battery from my camera to re-charge it before loading the images onto my computer, it flipped out of my grasp and tumbled to the floor, and then....

....slid under the one small arched space under the bookcase near our dining table.

I tried to retrieve it by sticking a ruler under there but only dragged out some clumps of dust and a Lego that my nephew must have lost here last summer. So, no photos of the restaurant
from me, but the website has a few that give a pretty accurate idea of what it's like. Its an old favorite that Mr. F and I like to go to--nothing trendy, a little off the beaten path and housed in a centuries old house which adds to the atmosphere of the interior.. The food is always good, and there was a piano player there that night--perfect!

I am waiting for Mr. F to get home so we can have our dinner--chicken parm from this place, and then let R go on her little Valentine's Day treasure hunt. Every year I do this(I think I started this tradition when she was in Kindergarten and could finally read). I write out little clues in verse on a paper cut-out heart:

"Roses are red,

violets are blue,

look on a plate for something sweet for you"

...which would lead her to the kitchen cupboard and a box of chocolate truffles(which I had to replace after Jewel discovered the first box last week and ate them! And, no she didn't die or even get sick that we know of...) and another clue:

"Milk chocolate is brown

White chocolate is white,

Look above your "image"

for something to help you write."

Which will, hopefully, lead her to the ledge above the bathroom mirror and some Vera Bradley paisley pencils...and so on.

Yeah, my poetry sucks, but I HAVE to do this every year(I think R would be disappointed if I didn't do it).

As I write, R and I
are watching the taped Grammies Awards show(it just ran too long last night to watch it all).
R and Mr. F were watching the first half last night, and I was originally not interested(not much an awards show watcher, usually)
and reading a book in another room, BUT...did catch the Avett Brothers on there. I was so surprised they were on the Grammies--god, they were SO good!

Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae were incredible, too(watch the performance here)!
Actually, for a long time, I have been wanting to write something about her
here--SHE should be more well-known than Lady Gaga, if you ask me--so much more creative and unique.
As for Gaga--to me she has never been interesting. Madonna has done it already. The music is catchy, but that is all.
At some point she'll run out of steam trying to top each outrageous stunt.
And that egg she was inside--what the hell? Didn't she feel like a dolt all cramped up in there?
All I could think of when I saw her "arrival" in the egg was of the "Stonehenge" scene
in Spinal Tap.
Oh yeah--Mick Jagger has still got it(even if he still does the same old "Mick Schtick"). R was impressed , too.
I had never known what a "Lady Antebellum" was until I saw the show. Yawn.
And Justin Bieber didn't win anything. Ha!
This year's Grammies were actually
okay.

The Happy List...

.... The mid-January 2011 Edition.

I felt myself feeling light-hearted and just plain happy today(and of course, the dog always makes any day happier). All day long. No cranky feelings of any kind. Although, its a good thing I am not a football fan, because there are a lot of unhappy New England Patriots fans right now(they tanked, apparently, against the NY Jets in the game that just a ended a short while ago).

The sun was shining and I felt happy and alive kicking through the deep snow up at the town soccer fields when I took Jewel up there for a romp this morning. It finally warmed up a little--it was actually in the low 30's F today, after days in the single digits(that was TOO cold for me). I could even feel the warmth of the sun on my face as I walked outside--pretty good for January, I think!

The daughter was away overnight at a friend's house, and I was missing her, since I barely saw her from Friday through Saturday (I was out Friday night, and then had to work on Sat.). And when she did get home this afternoon, she kind of surprised me by not immediately holing herself up in her bedroom like Mr. F and I were expecting she would. She actually hung around and talked to us(and of course, asked if there was anything to eat!). I think she might have missed us a little, too.

I drove up to the nearest Trader Joe's (which is always a fun place to go-it makes food shopping an event for me) after lunch time and was really loving the scenery from inside my moving car. The deep snow really is beautiful and looked spectacular under the bright blue winter sky. There were long icicles hanging and glittering from house eaves. There were snowmen in front yards(even one with a pointed birthday hat on). The inside of my car was warm and toasty, the heater on full blast. I loved that the highway was pretty empty and I could just fly, the tunes on my car radio blasting. Oh yeah, sometimes, I love driving under the right conditions!

Speaking of tunes on the radio, I am so thankful for WMVY on the FM dial. It is one of the few real radio stations left I think, with a creative playlist and real disc jockeys with real, distinct personalities(who occasionally make mistakes like playing the wrong song and then burst back on air with a goofy apology and then play the right one)like I remember every radio station had in years past. I know I am dating myself, because I think many people even my own age don't really listen to the radio anymore? But this station, broadcasting out of Martha's Vineyard still can make me feel happy listening to old and new songs and artists. You can even listen online. This song, by Buddy Guy and B.B. King(ages 74 and 85, respectively--and do they LOOK that old?! Not to me.) was the last song I heard as I headed back home , groceries piled in the back of the car, mission completed. It ended just as I drove into my drive at the house. How perfect is that? A bluesy, heartfelt song about gratitude and loving life. Turn it up, and listen to the whole thing, because the banter at the end is priceless.

Monday Morning Video

I have watched this one already more than a few times--a "thriller" of a cat fight that someone was lucky enough to catch on camera(and someone was clever enough to add the cinematic movie music to ). Not only are there cats involved, but there are these 2 birds(yes, birds), which makes this even more creepy/amazing. In fact, this seems almost choreographed--like a scene out of a ninja movie or The Lion King.
Alright, I should stop talking(writing)--I have(as usual) said too much. Just watch it.

My personal favorite musical discoveries and performers of 2010.....

* Adele,
* Rodrigo y Gabriela,
* Trombone Shorty,
and...
* The Avett Brothers (Mr. F turned me onto these guys)

Rock This Weekend...

...with Ben Folds and the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra.
I am SO happy it is 5:30 and I am home (finally) from work and this live Ben Folds video is my intro to the weekend(even though I have to work tomorrow, but for right now, I am trying to forget about that).

Happy Birthday...

...Jonathan!
Yep, it's Jonathan Richman's 59th. And I know I am repeating myself by featuring this video of him on the Conan's old "Late Night" show, but it's a favorite of mine(the song, performance, Conan's show) so I had to do it again.

That's all there is....

Just a few more photos from the Public Garden(and one from Newbury Street) in Boston.

The fresh green and blooming atmosphere in the Garden made it feel as if you had stepped into Monet painting at times. The city--besides the throngs at Quincy Market and the Aquarium(the line to purchase tickets to get in was so long, we didn't bother) was kind of quiet, it seemed to me. Maybe the absence of flights coming in from Europe because of the problems with the volcano ash had something to do with it?(still heard lots of different languages there, but interestingly, mostly German this time!) The stores -both low end and upscale--were for the most part empty. A sign of these struggling times.

Of course, I had plans for more of an interesting blog entry earlier in the day, but I am so gosh darn tired today, so this is all I can manage.

Boston and all the walking wiped me out.

Or maybe being 47 and 6 months old is wiping me out.

Standing on my feet all day at work for seven hours is making me feel old and tired.

Also making me feel tired(and a little depressed)-- knowing that my only week long vacation of the entire year is still yet to come(end of July) and feeling like I could certainly use that week right now, and also thinking to myself,

"Is this how I should be living my life? Just little spurts of free time...a day or so(every once in a while--a three day weekend), but then never truly long enough to be entirely free from thoughts of work?"

Kvetch..kvetch...I know. I shouldn't.

Other things in my life are good, including my good health(for the moment, and I am truly grateful for that), great little home and family. Most days I am pretty upbeat and okay with the way things are. They could certainly be far, far worse.

Still...there are those days when you think,
"is that all there is?"

Stand Up Performance

Most likely, many have already seen this newest Internet cat video sensation (like Nora the piano-playing cat), but I had to share this here anyway. I want to see a folded newspaper tucked under one kitty arm and and an umbrella in the other paw.

Can't help wondering, though, what kind of person has both this adorable, seemingly well-cared for cat as a pet and a (framed?) poster of Grand Theft Auto on the wall?

I say tomato...

.... you say,
........ canned tomato soup?
You'll never want to eat it again after trying this easy recipe for homemade tomato soup.
I adapted the following recipe for this evening's supper, from a recipe that I found in a back issue of Martha Stewart's Everyday Food magazine(you know...those cute digest size magazines that are usually displayed near the supermarket check-out aisle?)
My small changes and additions are in purple (I say you must add the garlic!). Served with grilled cheese or BLT sandwiches, or simply with some tasty croutons or bruschetta, this makes a simple and flavorful meal.

Classic Tomato Soup
Serves 6

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
(add one to two minced garlic cloves)
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1/4 cup all-purpose flour

3 tablespoons tomato paste
2 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
(I used a half teaspoon dried oregano instead)
2 cans (14 1/2 ounces each) reduced-sodium chicken broth
(veggie broth okay, too)
2 cans (28 ounces each) whole peeled plum tomatoes in juice

Directions
In a 5-quart saucepan or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat; add oil and onion, and season with salt and pepper. Cook until onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in flour and tomato paste; cook 1 minute.
To saucepan, add thyme, broth, and tomatoes, breaking up tomatoes with your fingers. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, 30 minutes. (Remove thyme sprigs before blending.)

Using an immersion blender, puree soup in pot, leaving a fair amount of the tomatoes in chunks. Or, working in several batches, puree half (5 cups) of the soup in a conventional blender until smooth; return to pot. Season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately, or let cool to room temperature before dividing among airtight containers (leaving 1 inch of space at the top) and freezing.

Journey Over Rhode Island

A nifty video shot from the air over portions of Rhode Island. This makes me long even more for summer when this little place really shines. Ocean breezes throughout the summer months keep it cool and comfortable and it is a great place to live(or visit). Small is beautiful.

In order of *appearance*
Rose Island Lighthouse
Newport Mansions
Newport Harbor
Newport Bridge
Narragansett Bay
Beavertail Lighthouse ( one of my favorite places in the entire state)
My town--shown from 1:20 to 1:37 !!
Block Island Ferry
Block Island views, including the old hotels and North Light at the northern tip of the island
Back on the mainland to the north part of the state
Pawtucket(make sure you pronounce it P'tuckit like a true Rhode Islander)
The capital city-Providence(not much of a skyline, aye?)

Heaven x 2

Heaven

(J. Harrison, D. Byrne)

Everyone is trying to get to the bar.

The name of the bar, the bar is called Heaven.

The band in Heaven plays my favorite song.

They play it once again, they play it all night long.

**

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

There is a party, everyone is there.

Everyone will leave at exactly the same time.

Its hard to imagine that nothing at allcould be so exciting, and so much fun.

**

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

When this kiss is over it will start again.

It will not be any different, it will be exactlythe same.

It's hard to imagine that nothing at allcould be so exciting, could be so much fun.

Heaven is a place where nothing every happens.

Heaven is a place where nothing every happens.

A double digit day(and my sister's birthday, too), so I thought for Music For Monday I would have to have two songs. But the same song.
First, "Heaven", the Talking Heads song, sung and played by my new favorite Irish band, BellX1(who I always thought sounded a lot like Talking Heads, and then voila! I discover this on You Tube:

And then of course, as done originally by the Talking Heads:

Music for Monday

In the mood for some Regina Spektor and this is one of her songs I have playing constantly on my MP3-player(yes, it's just an MP3-player--no iPod or brand name). Just never get tired of this song.
And....I'll dedicate this song to a unique and caring blogger who lives in Guatemala(and loves music and radios..), and whose birthday it is happens to be today(Hola, Claudia!).

On the radio
We heard, 'November Rain'
That solo's really long
But it's a pretty song
We listened to it twice
'Case the DJ was asleep

This is how it works
You're young until you're not
You love until you don't
You try until you can't

You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took

And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else's heart
Pumping someone else's blood

And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
But even if it does
You'll just do it all again

And on the radio
You hear, 'November Rain'
That solo's awful long
But it's a good refrain
You listen to it twice
'Cause the DJ is asleep

On the radio, on the radio
On the radio, uh oh, on the radio, uh oh
On the radio, uh oh, on the radio

Just One More Sesame Street Video

This is all kinds of wrong, but I think it's my favorite Bert and Ernie clip ever. Heh.

I am....

i am
glad to be home finally after driving north to some rural area(got lost a little, too) to cheer on R at the cross-country race (very hilly course which was tough for all the runners, including my daughter), and then waiting by the roadside for an hour and fifteen minutes for AAA roadside service after my sister's tire got a flat. At least we had a good sisterly chat(with my sister doing most of the chatting, of course) during the drive up and back and then standing outside in the windy(and thankfully warm) fresh air.

i feel

a little foggy and and "out of it" but otherwise relaxed(if a little grungy and in need of a shower--see "I want" below) and ready for this evening's trick-or-treaters. I dumped out all the candy into two large bowls and even though I always think I didn't buy enough, it now looks like we may get stuck with too many left-over Nerds and Sweet Tarts.
i eat
a "naked" gingerbread man (never did decorate them)

i want
to take a shower soon and do a little pampering--maybe paint my toenails and slather on some nice scented lotion(something a little strong and spicy and Halloween-ish?). I feel a little grungy from being outside all that time, with the wind swirling the leaves and surely some roadside dirt around. Want to feel all comfy, clean and yes, a little sexy this Halloween Eve.

i need

to drink some water--have a slight headache and think I am a little dehydrated. A few whiskey and cokes last night out for cocktails with Mr. F, and then drinking too much coffee all day so far is probably why....

i watch
I think we'll watch "Murder By Death"--that old Neil Simon murder mystery spoof movie from the 1976(got it from Netflix this week in the mail). I remember going to see this in the cinema way back...then. ;-) And I have never seen again it since. Thought it would be a good, safely non-scary flick for tonight(I don't do horror movies, usually)

i listen
Loreena McKennit. Her music is so appropriate for this time of year, and I love the way she and the other musicians blend Celtic and Middle Eastern music.

Bonfires dot the rolling hillside

Figures dance around and around

To drums that pulse out the echoes of darkness

Moving to the ancient sound

Somewhere in a distant memory

Images float before my eyes

Of fragrant nights of straw and of bonfires

And dancing until the next sunrise
**********

I can see the lights in the distance

Trembling in the dark cloak of night

Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing

A waltz on All Souls Night
***********

Figures of cornstalks bend in the shadows

Held up tall as the flames leap high

The green knight holds the holly bush

To mark where the old year passes by
********

Bonfires dot the rolling hillside

Figures dance around and around

To drums that pulse out the echoes of darkness

Moving to the ancient sound
*********

Standing on the bridge that crosses

The river that flows out to sea

The wind is full of a thousand voices

They pass by the bridge and me

Bagpipes On The Brain

"I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired

when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm.

Unfortunately, the manmade sound never equalled

the purity of the sound achieved by the pig."

- Alfred Hitchcock

Ever since I read about an odd bagpipes experience over at only a movie earlier this week, I keep thinking about bagpipes. Which I find sort of thrilling(especially combined with the drums) when I hear them, actually. Makes me want to be proudly Scottish or some such. And I am not Scottish(that I know of--French Canadian, Greek, German is what I am...that I know of...).

Anyway, I scoured YouTube for some bagpipe action and I am going to share two good ones today.

The first is some footage from 1976(!)of AC/DC on an Australian show. Sure, the singing and bagpipe playing(by a very young looking Bon Scott--R.I.P.)is probably lip-synced(pipe-synced?)but it's great and ....so are the disco dresses on the dancing ladies in the background.

Second video is of a Scottish pipes and Brazilian Samba drums playing outfit called MacUmba. The quality of the video is kind of shoddy-but the sound quality is good.

The Journey

....my new favorite song of the fall...so far.

Dolores O'Riordan's new(ish)one. I just love her look (does she have the most fantastic bone structure in her face, or what?!), with the short, peroxided hair, too.

Honestly Scrappy

In my typical way, it has taken me weeks and weeks to acknowledge and participate in an Honest Scrap award/tag I was given by both Claudia and Zuzana. Thank you, ladies, for thinking of me, and I didn't forget you--just sort of filed it away in the "must-add-to-blog-eventually" file. And I pulled it out of that file today.
Here are the "official" rules:
A) List 10 honest things about yourself—and make them interesting, even if you have to dig deep!

B) Pass the award on to 7 bloggers(I think I'll pass it on two beautiful Greek bloggers--Anastasia and December Girl) who you feel embody the spirit of the Honest Scrap and whose blogs you find brilliant in design or content.

So, here are some possibly interesting and honest things about the Gal Friday.

1. I can't read a mystery unless it is set in the British Isles. I have tried mysteries set in the U.S., Italy, etcetra, but for some reason it doesn't seem right to me and I just can't enjoy them. So, it is always British "location" mysteries for me, be it a "cozy"(Ann Granger), or a psychological one (Ruth Rendell, Minette Walters) or classic old-school mysteries(Agatha Christie).

2. I can't whistle. Never could figure out how to do it.

3. I have never played any kind of video game(if this is even the correct name for them) or X Box or Nintendo or Guitar Band(or is it Rock Hero?) and have zero interest in ever doing so.

4. I love polka dots--definitely have a weakness for them. I would just love to have this blouse, for instance.

5. Also, I have a weakness for striped socks and stockings. Even at age of "nearly" 47, if I see a pair of striped knee socks, I am immediately attracted and want to buy them. I just bought a pair of black and white knee high ones the other day.

6. I am very childish about things like old cartoons and children's books. I'll happily sit down to watch old Bugs Bunny and Pink Panther cartoons and guffaw loudly, or look at and even still buy children's picture books(I say it is for my husband's third grade classroom). I miss reading aloud to my daughter very much. And I am continually amazed by the beautiful and/or funny books out there for children. I also love having copies of old favorites from my childhood around.

7. I don't eat eggs other than scrambled(and then they have to be very dry and cooked to death and even then I can't sometimes finish them) or in a recipe(as in baked goods). Just to look at and smell fried or hard or soft-boiled eggs makes me sick. I think I have written about this before. I think I am running out of unique things to tell about myself at this point.

8. I am very afraid of heights. A real phobia.
Crossing a tall bridge, whether as a passenger or driver(white knuckles gripping the steering wheel the whole way over) is an almost panicky thing for me. I can't stand against a glass window of a skyscraper window (went to the top of one of the now-gone World Trade Towers once as a teen and felt physically ill and could only remain in the center against a wall) and am barely able to even watch other people without my form of fear as they peer down cliff edges and other tall places. I won't even go on a Ferris Wheel at a fair! Just the *thought* of the movie
"Man On A Wire" gives me a chill.

9. I often fear I am not liked--in my online and offline life. I worry that I say things the wrong way, am annoying, and offend people(when I don't mean to) and come off as strange and snobby. I hide behind a mask of sorts and only really open up to a few people when I feel safe and I think people who don't know me well can't see beyond that. Now, I actually like myself(have learned to do away with most self-esteem issues and accept I am stuck with who I am, so might as well make the best of it)--but still don't like that some people don't like me. Should a nearly 50 year old person be this silly and confused? Probably not, but that is how I have always been.

10. I love it when men wear black turtlenecks(or in the case of my husband who can't stand anything that high up on his neck--black or dark colored "mock" turtlenecks). Such a good look on a man...oh yeah.White turtlenecks, on the other hand--not such a good look on a man, IMHO. Unless, you are Tony Bennett--now HE can wear a white turtleneck(and can sing).
